Tree Planting on the Wild Flower Bank

Sunday was a good opportunity to help Inverkeithing and Dalgety Bay Rotary in planting three Silver Birches on our Wild Flower Bank in front of Crow Wood. The local branch are taking part in Rotary International’s aim to plant at least one tree for every member before Earth Day on 22nd April.

The trees were supplied by local garden centre Growforth Ltd and are native Silver Birch, an excellent tree which is both attractive and has excellent wildlife value, with caterpillars of many species of moth using its leaves. These trees replace the water hungry non-native Leylandii which, in our current more variable climate, was drying out the bank and affecting the growth and flowering of the many native wildflower species that are now growing there. It was also good to see that the plug grown native wild flowers planted in early December are now showing signs of new growth. We may be getting a cold blast in the next few days, but spring will follow.
