Fungi
Fungi are essential for recycling the dead branches and leaves that would otherwise accumulate and swamp everything. For the most part they work away unnoticed and it is usually only in autumn and winter that we see their fruiting bodies as they emerge to spead their spores on the wind or water to find new material to break down.
